It is particularly stunning to trek at high elevation through blooming rhododendron forest, the gnarled branches covered in moss topped with shiny ever green leaves with large snowy flowers is truly a sight you’ll not easily forget. If you like rhododendron bloom in their natural habitat, you must plan your visit for Nepal early in the season. Many Rhododendrons species bloom from march through early may. If possible try to coincide your visits with those dates.

The different Rhododendron species really vary, so you may see tall trees boasting large white flowers, purple flowered shrubs, or tiny plants creeping along the ground with large red flowers. To see Rhododendrons in the wild, you’ll likely need o plan a trek above 1,500metres, as rhododendrons grow at high elevation.

Some common species that you may see on trek in Nepal are rhododendron arboreum, rhododendron campanulatum, rhododendron forrestii and many other. Rhododendron arboreum the national flower of Nepal, is an impressive tree specis that grows to be approximately 20 meters tall and has blooms brilliant red flowers. Rhododendron campulatum has purple, white or blue flowers held together in a bundle (called a truss) and grows approximately 5 meters tall. Rhododendron forrestii is one of my favorite one that grows at very high elevations,forms little mound and does not grow larger than 20 centimeters tall. In context to its small size and tiny leaves, it has  large and bright red flowers that are really magnificent.
